The Cyprian Educational System

Pre-Primary educationin Cyprus is available for children over the age of 3, it lasts for one year and is compulsory before entering primary school. Primary school then lasts for 6 years.

At the age of 12, Cypriots enter Secondary General Education which gives a broad interdisciplinary education with a variety of extracurricular activities. This includes Gymnasio (lower secondary education) and Lykeio (upper secondary education) and lasts for six years. Insted of the three years of Lykeio students may attend Secondary Technical and Vocational Education which will provide them whith the knowledge and skills needed to go directly into the working life or proceed to further studies.

Higher Education in Cyprus

Higher education in Cyprus is provided in both public and private institurions and the system is under constant development. The Department of Higher Tertiary Education (DAAE) in Cyprus has taken big measures to increase funding, research and interest for higher education, three state universities has been opened. The DAAE also established a Council of Educational Evaluation-Accreditation which aims to keep a constant level of education in Cyprus and make sure that infrastructure and equipment live up to these standards. Since Cyprus became a member of the EU in 2004 the role of higher education in the country has grown even bigger and the Open University of Cyprus has opened its doors

As English is the language of instruction in many programmes of higher education in Cyprus many abroad students find their education here. In 2005-06 many foreign students came from Europe,Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and China.

Study Abroad in Cyprus

If you live inside the European Union The travelling will be made a bit easier but if you are from a country outside of the EU you will also need entry clearence issued by a Cyprus Diplomatic Mission in your home country to enter and study in Cyprus Before leaving their home country, all foreign student must make shore to bring:

  • Original Bank Certificate for the payment of the academic fees and receipt from the college against the fees paid.
  • Original Academic Certificates
  • Original Passport. Passport should be valid for at least one year from the day of entry into Cyprus
  • Visa or entry clearance
  • Money in cash for the accommodation and living expenses

 

Upon arrival in Cyprus the immigration officer will also ask for you fingerprints in addition to these documents. It is recommended that you double check these procedures with the Embassy of Cyprus in your country before leaving to enter Cyprus

Cypriot Culture and Cuisine

Coming to Cyprus you will find a vast range of cultural influences, most coming from the neighbouring countries of Greece and Turkey. The folk music is similar to the one of Greece, with beautiful violins and penny whistles.

Food inspiration comes from France, Italy and Turkey but one can also see Anglo-Saxon influences do to occupation o fthe island. Halloumi, or hellim as it is called in Turkish, is just one fo the internationally known delicacies originating from Cyprus. This national cheese is served fresh, fried or grilled as an apitiser, aged halloumi is graded over paste dishes. Many dishes smell of cumin an coriander. The Cypriot wine industry ranks 37th in the world and is a significant contributor to the Cypriot economy. The counrty ismost known for its Commandaria dessert wine.
